The products contained guar gum, which supposedly swelled in the stomach to provide a feeling of fullness. However, the swelling from the guar gum caused blockages in the throat and stomach. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In February 1996, FDA also proposed new warning labels for OTC diet pills containing phenylpropanolamine (PPA), including the statement that the product is "For use by people 18 years of age and older." &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;PPA is an ingredient found not only in many OTC diet pills but also in cough-cold and allergy products as well. FDA is concerned PPA may possibly increase the risk of a type of stroke (hemorrhagic) caused by bleeding into the brain, as was suggested by some reports of bleeding in the brain among PPA users, typically young women. This possible risk could be further increased if a person took more than the recommended dose of PPA, which might occur inadvertently from also taking a cough-cold product with PPA. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While FDA agrees that studies have not shown a definite link between PPA and stroke, the agency believes data from a more comprehensive study are needed to confirm the ingredient's safety. As a result, the OTC drug industry began a five-year study in 1994. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Michael Weintraub, M.D, director of FDA's Office of Drug Evaluation V, says, "PPA diet pills are not recommended for use by &lt;SPAN id=google-navclient-hilite style="font-weight: 700; color: black"&gt;teenagers&lt;/SPAN&gt; also because they are still growing and if they suppress their appetite, they may not get proper nutrition." &lt;i&gt;The dangers of diet pills are too high for teenagers&lt;/i&gt;. Some can hurt our health, while others aren't so bad &amp;ndash; some are even good for you! Here's what you need to know: &lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Monounsaturated fats&lt;/strong&gt; (canola, olive and peanut oils, and avocados) and &lt;strong&gt;polyunsaturated fats&lt;/strong&gt; (safflower, sesame, sunflower seeds, and many other nuts and seeds) don't raise your LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels but can raise your HDL ("good") cholesterol levels. To keep healthy, it is best to choose foods with these fats. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Saturated fat, trans fatty acids,&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;dietary cholesterol&lt;/strong&gt; raise your LDL ("bad") blood cholesterol levels, which can lead to heart disease. &lt;strong&gt;Saturated fat&lt;/strong&gt; is found mostly in food from animals, like beef, veal, lamb, pork, lard, poultry fat, butter, cream, whole milk dairy products, cheeses, and from some plants, such as tropical oils. Tropical oils include coconut, palm kernel, and palm oils that are found in commercial cakes, cookies, and salty snack foods. Unlike other plant oils, these oils have a lot of saturated fatty acids. Some processed foods (such as frozen dinners and canned foods) can be quite high in saturated fat &amp;mdash; it' s best to check package labels before purchasing these types of foods. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;p align="left"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Trans fatty acids (TFAs)&lt;/strong&gt; are formed during the process of making cooking oils, margarine, and shortening and are in commercially fried foods, baked goods, cookies, and crackers. Dr. Agatston developed this diet for his cardiac patients based upon his study of scientific dieting research. The diet first appeared in a book of the same name published by Rodale Press.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;South Beach diet&lt;/strong&gt; is often incorrectly compared to the Atkins diet which is predominantly a low-carbohydrate diet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dr. Agatston believes that excess consumption of so-called "bad carbohydrates", such as the rapidly-absorbed carbohydrates found in foods with a high glycemic index, creates an insulin resistance syndrome&amp;mdash;an impairment of the hormone insulin&amp;rsquo;s ability to properly process fat or sugar. In addition, he believes along with most physicians that excess consumption of "bad fats", such as saturated fat and trans fat, contributes to an increase in cardiovascular disease. To prevent these two conditions, Agatston's diet minimizes consumption of bad fats and bad carbs and encourages increased consumption of good fats and good carbs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;The diet has three phases.&lt;/em&gt; In all phases of the diet, Dr. Agatston recommends minimizing consumption of bad fats. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;In Phase I&lt;/strong&gt;, lasting two weeks, dieters attempt to eliminate insulin resistance by avoiding high or moderately high-glycemic carbs, such as sugar, candy, bread, potatoes, fruit, cereals, and grains. During this phase, Dr. Agatston says the body will lose its insulin resistance, and begin to use excess body fat, causing the dieter to lose between 8 and 13 pounds.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After two weeks, &lt;strong&gt;Phase II begins&lt;/strong&gt;. Whole grain foods and fruits are gradually returned to the diet, although in smaller amounts than were likely eaten before beginning the diet, and with a continued emphasis on foods with a low glycemic index. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When the dieter reaches the desired weight, &lt;strong&gt;Phase III begins&lt;/strong&gt;. When eating any carbohydrates, Dr. Agatston recommends also eating fiber or fat to slow digestion of the carbohydrates. &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Good fats&lt;/b&gt; are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, especially those with omega-3 fatty acids. Saturated and trans fats are bad fats. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The diet emphasizes (1) a permanent change in one's way of eating, (2) a variety of foods, and (3) ease and flexibility. Eating whole grains and large amounts of vegetables is encouraged, along with adequate amounts of mono- and polyunsaturated fats, including omega-3 fatty acids, such as are contained in fish. It discourages the eating of overly refined processed foods (particularly refined flours and sugars), high-fat meats, and saturated fats in general.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The diet does not require counting calories or limiting servings -- &lt;strong&gt;Agatston &lt;/strong&gt;suggests you eat until you are satisfied. Dieters are told to eat 6 meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with small snacks between each meal.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In 2004, Kraft Foods licensed the South Beach Diet trademark for use on a line of packaged foods that would be designed to meet the requirements of the diet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A 2004 study of the South Beach Diet by Agatston, et al., reviewed a 1998-1999 trial completed by 54 participants over the course of a year. When&lt;strong&gt; diets&lt;/strong&gt; are high in carbs, the body burns them as fuel. But &lt;em&gt;when carbs are restricted, the body must burn fat. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Another key: lots of protein and fat.&lt;/em&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Atkins &lt;/strong&gt;says these foods are satiating, and dieters are unlikely to binge on chicken, shrimp, or bacon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Phases of&lt;/em&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Atkins Diet&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are four phases.&lt;br /&gt;Proteins and fats are eaten liberally in every phase, but carbs are restricted to different degrees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt; In the first two weeks (the &lt;em&gt;Induction phase&lt;/em&gt;) dieters are limited to 20 grams of carbohydrate per day, or roughly the amount in 3 cups of salad vegetables. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;After that, carbs are gradually added back in 5-gram increments until weight loss stops. Atkins calls this point the Critical Carbohydrate for Losing Level (CCLL). Dieters will all have different thresholds, but about 35 to 40 grams of carbs per day seems to result in a continued 1-pound-per-week weight loss for the average person. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;As you approach your goal weight, you pass into the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases, in which carb levels, although still limited, are adjusted to suit your needs and preferences. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;What you can eat?&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It's basically an eat-until-you're-full extravaganza of pure proteins (meat, fish, eggs, cheese) and pure fats (olive oil, mayonnaise, butter, cream, sour cream). What's important is controlling carbs, particularly in the initial two-week phase when dieters are limited to a few cups of salad along with the meat and fat. Interestingly, margarine is taboo -- not because of its carbs, but because it may contain trans fats. Eventually, small amounts of carbohydrate-rich foods are added back into the diet. After two weeks of dieting, dieters are allowed to reintroduce caffeine.&lt;br /&gt;As far as &lt;em&gt;alcohol&lt;/em&gt; is concerned, the body will choose alcohol as the first fuel it burns, &lt;strong&gt;Atkins&lt;/strong&gt; says. After the initial two weeks, dieters can drink wine or liquor moderately.&lt;br /&gt;However, is &lt;strong&gt;Atkins Diet&lt;/strong&gt; suitable for &lt;em&gt;Vegetarians&lt;/em&gt;?&lt;br /&gt;It's quite difficult.
